The UK has never defaulted on conventional gilt principal in modern history, which is why gilts are treated as high-quality collateral. Inflation, duration and currency still create real losses for the wrong holder.
In local currency, UK gilt credit is treated as very high quality. The UK has never defaulted on gilts in modern market history. That is credit safety, not return safety.
2022 showed mark-to-market risk: long gilt prices fell sharply as yields rose and LDI delevered. Holders who needed to sell then locked in losses. Holders who needed 2061 pounds in 2061 did not lose the coupon contract.
Currency safety is only for sterling spenders. A euro-based holder takes GBP moves on top of duration.
