Which Government Bonds Are Considered the Safest?

Redacción de Financial World News · Explicación educativa · Cómo obtenemos las rentabilidades

Credit agencies and markets usually put US, German and Swiss government debt at the top. Safety is currency-specific.

Which Government Bonds Are Considered the Safest — the mechanics

‘Safest’ for a Swiss hospital’s CHF bills is a Confederation bond. For a US household’s dollar rent, it is a Treasury. Ranking sovereigns in a vacuum ignores the only risk that always matters: the currency of your life.

Safest credit in this set: US (dollars), Germany (euros), UK (pounds), Switzerland (francs), then France, then Italy — as markets usually rank them, not as a rating-agency copy-paste on this page.

Safest mark-to-market is the shortest bill, not the ‘safest’ 30-year. Safest for a household is the currency they spend.

Swiss and German paper can be ‘too safe’ — yields so low they lose to inflation. Safety of repayment is not safety of purchasing power.

Official sources (Comparisons)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for Comparisons are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Puntos clave

  • Safest credit in this set: US (dollars), Germany (euros), UK (pounds), Switzerland (francs), then France, then Italy — as markets usually rank them, not as a rating-agency copy-paste on this page..
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

FAQ

Are ratings the whole story?
No. Liquidity, legal jurisdiction and politics also matter. Ratings also lag markets.
