Why Do Bond Yields Rise — the mechanics

A yield rise is a price fall. Drivers include central-bank hikes, hotter inflation prints, heavy issuance, or a global dump of duration. The mix changes by week — dated data only.

Yields rise when sellers of duration outnumber buyers at the old yield: inflation surprises, hawkish central banks, heavy issuance, or a better competing overnight rate.

They also rise when a risk-on mood sends money to equities, or when a specific sovereign’s spread widens (BTPs versus bunds) even if ‘global rates’ are quiet.

A rising yield is a falling price for the old bond and a better lock-in for the new buyer. Both can be true.

Official sources (International guides)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for International guides are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Ключові висновки

  • Yields rise when sellers of duration outnumber buyers at the old yield: inflation surprises, hawkish central banks, heavy issuance, or a better competing overnight rate..
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

Поширені запитання

Do yields rise only when the central bank hikes?
No. Markets hike for the central bank in advance, and long yields can rise on supply even if policy is on hold.
