Who Buys UK Government Gilts — the mechanics
Ownership shifts through time. Overseas investors matter for sterling; UK pensions matter for the long end. Always read the latest DMO/ONS breakdown rather than a stale pie chart.
The stock is held by overseas official and private investors, UK insurance and pensions, banks, and the Bank of England’s APF (a declining share under QT). Retail is a small slice of the free float.

You do not need to be a pension fund to hold a 5-year gilt. You do need to accept that the price is set by those larger players.
