How to Buy US Treasury Bonds — the mechanics
US households can buy at auction via TreasuryDirect without a bid-ask spread. Brokers add convenience and IRA wrappers. Funds add diversification and fees.
TreasuryDirect.gov is the official non-competitive auction route for individuals. You get the stop-out yield, no dealer spread, with Treasury’s own account rules and transfer limits.
A US broker or IRA is easier if you already have one, and you can sell before maturity. You pay whatever bid–ask the platform shows.
Non-US investors usually cannot use TreasuryDirect the same way; they use a broker and take FX plus local tax. There is no special ‘foreigner coupon’.
Official sources (US Treasuries)
Primary statistics and prospectuses for US Treasuries are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).
Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.
Pontos essenciais
- TreasuryDirect.gov is the official non-competitive auction route for individuals.
- Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
- Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.
FAQ
- Is TreasuryDirect free?
- TreasuryDirect does not charge a purchase commission for auction awards. You still need to understand tax reporting and reinvestment options.
