UK Gilts vs US Treasuries: What's the Difference?

Ritstjórn Financial World News · Fræðsluskýring · Hvernig við sækjum ávöxtun

Issuer, currency, liquidity, pension demand and central banks. A dated yield snapshot belongs in the table, not in the URL.

Fullt yfirlit þessa leiðarvísa er á ensku. Titill, samantekt og leiðsögn eru á þínu tungumáli svo þú getir ákveðið hvort þú lesir áfram.

UK Gilts vs US Treasuries — the mechanics

This is the G7 pair most English-language investors search. Treat it as two curves plus a FX rate, not as a single ‘which is better’ headline.

Currency, central bank, market depth, tax wrappers, and who holds the stock (US global reserve vs UK LDI). Those five beat a 20bp yield table.

Treasuries are the world’s collateral. Gilts are Britain’s. Borrowing dollars against gilts is a worse haircut story than against T-notes — a dealer fact that still leaks into prices.

Our live board shows both 10-year prints with dates. Subtract them only after you decide what to do with FX.

Dated yields for this comparisons topic

The live board on this site prints official or exchange 10-year rates with the observation date on each card (Bank of England IUDMNZC, ECB Maastricht series, CBOE/Yahoo Treasury yields). Individual ISIN prices are estimated from those moves — not a dealer quote.

Illustrative round-number snapshot for education. Figures are not a live market feed. Confirm with the UK DMO, TreasuryDirect, Bundesrepublik Deutschland Finanzagentur, Italian MEF, Agence France Trésor or Swiss Confederation before acting.

Official sources (Comparisons)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for Comparisons are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Helstu atriði

  • Currency, central bank, market depth, tax wrappers, and who holds the stock (US global reserve vs UK LDI).
  • Any market figure belongs next to a date and a named source (BoE, ECB, CBOE/Yahoo). If those disagree with your broker, the broker wins for trading.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

Algengar spurningar

Should I pick the higher yield?
Not without hedging or accepting currency risk. A higher gilt yield can vanish in a sterling drop.
