How to Buy Government Bonds — the mechanics
Direct holdings let you target a maturity. Funds give instant diversification and an exit at NAV, with fees and no single maturity date. Auctions versus secondary market is the second fork.
Routes: official retail (TreasuryDirect, some DMO access), a broker, a bank, or a fund/ETF. Primary auctions are mostly dealers. Secondary is where households live.
Match the wrapper to the tax: ISA, SIPP, IRA, PEA, etc., where they exist. A 15bp cheaper yield in a taxable account can lose to a 15bp richer yield in a shelter.
If the ticket is small, an ETF of that government curve often has a kinder spread than an off-the-run 30-year ISIN.
Official sources (International guides)
Primary statistics and prospectuses for International guides are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).
Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.
Ključni zaključci
- Routes: official retail (TreasuryDirect, some DMO access), a broker, a bank, or a fund/ETF.
- Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
- Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.
Česta pitanja
- Is an ETF ‘the same’ as a bond?
- No. An ETF is a fund of many bonds with no single maturity (unless it is a defined-maturity product). Duration can stay constant.
