What Are Government Bonds — the mechanics

You are not buying a company. You are buying a promise from a treasury. The promise is simple; the market price is not, because rates, inflation and politics move every session.

A government bond is a loan to a state: coupon plus principal on stated dates, usually transferable in a market before those dates. The issuer, currency and maturity are the three facts that matter before yield.

Gilts, Treasuries, bunds, BTPs, OATs and Swiss Confederation bonds are the same legal idea in different currencies and calendars. This site’s live board is those 10-year points with sources.

Not every government bond is ‘risk-free’. Local-currency G7 paper is treated that way in models. Emerging-market hard-currency paper is a different course.

Official sources (International guides)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for International guides are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Vigtige pointer

  • A government bond is a loan to a state: coupon plus principal on stated dates, usually transferable in a market before those dates.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

FAQ

Is a government bond guaranteed profit?
No. Credit is usually high for G7 issuers, but prices fall when yields rise, and inflation can erode real returns.
