Bank Rate sets the floor for sterling cash. Gilt yields embed the path of Bank Rate the market expects, not only today’s setting.

UK Gilts and Bank of England Interest Rates — the mechanics

When traders reprice the number of cuts or hikes, two-year gilts move first. Thirty-year gilts also notice, but they care more about long-run inflation and gilt supply.

MPC Bank Rate sets the overnight floor. Gilt yields are the term structure built on top. QE/QT change the quantity of gilts the private sector must hold, which can shift term premia.

A ‘higher for longer’ Bank Rate path lifts 2-year gilts first. A fiscal remit that increases long issuance can lift 30-year gilts even if Bank Rate is on hold.

Do not trade an MPC headline against a 2061 gilt and call it a Bank Rate trade. Isolate the front end if that is the bet.

Official sources (UK Gilts)

Primary statistics and prospectuses for UK Gilts are published by the issuer, not by this newsroom. The labelled links at the end of this page go to those official sites (DMO, TreasuryDirect, Finanzagentur, MEF, AFT, SNB or ECB as relevant).

Our live board is a teaching overlay: dated prints, named sources, estimated ISIN lines. It is not a replacement for the issuer’s calendar.

Ključni zaključci

  • MPC Bank Rate sets the overnight floor.
  • Prices and yields change. When this site quotes them, it dates them on the live board.
  • Credit of a G7 government in its own currency is not the same as a stable screen price, and not the same as a bank deposit.

Česta pitanja

If Bank Rate falls, do all gilt prices rise?
Often the front end rallies. The long end can still fall if issuance or inflation news dominates.
